The Great Smuggling Debate

In school, we had a debate about smuggling in Cornwall to see whether it was right or wrong. We split the class into two groups (for and against) to develop arguments against the other side. This debate went on for a while.

Thanks to Ruby and Kai (chairwoman and chairman) for controlling the debate, and the three speakers from each side; Gabe, Faith and Zak (against) and Poppy, Gabriel and Niamh (for).

Each side stated their opening arguments and it all went off with a BANG! It got very tense and there were a lot of different opinions. There were questions back and forth which really got the speakers to think about what they were debating. We could see that the speakers got confused at times and looked to the audience for support but overall they managed very well.

The end result was a draw. Miss Draper asked all members of the class if they were for or against smuggling before the debate and afterwards to see if anyone was persuaded to change their mind. Three people changed their vote from ‘against smuggling’ to ‘for smuggling’ after listening to the arguments from both sides. Miss Draper then asked the adults to vote following the debate which gave a result of 2-1 to the ‘Against Smuggling’ side. When we heard the results everyone celebrated.

We would like to thank the whole of class 6 for their effort in preparing for, and taking part in, the debate and Miss Draper for organsing the event. A video will be coming soon with some highlights.

Cornish Sunshine

It was so nice to see the sunshine make an appearance today, we decided to make the most of it by heading down to Swanpool to do some sea sketches to go with our seascape paintings, which we have been working on with Mrs Pellow.

Maritime  Mischief

Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s ‘A Smuggler’s Song’, the children in Class 6 set about making a Cornish Tavern, complete with secret tunnel, a cellar full of stash & barrels (which also make a handy disguise) and a shipwreck…

Class 6 Home Learning – Thursday 3rd December 2015

Next week, we will be exploring gravity and friction to build and launch our own rockets. In preparation for this, the children need to research the history of Human Spaceflight; have all missions been successful and what was their purpose?

It would also be really helpful if the children could bring in any junk modelling items they have going spare at home e.g. toilet roll tubes, boxes etc.

Mission 2 – Space Weather

As part of the Astro Science Challenge, our mission last week was all based on Space Weather. We learnt that storms on the Sun, which send streams of energetic charged particles towards Earth, can have devastating effects, causing massive power cuts and disrupting mobile phone networks and GPS signals.

We also learnt that when these streams of particles interact with the Earth’s magnetic field, aurora displays can be seen in the sky. We’ve looked a bit more at Aurora Borealis (or the Northern Lights) today and have started to create our own 2D artwork, using chalks and pastels. We’re finishing them off tomorrow, and they will be on display in Class 6 if you would like to pop in and have a look!

Mesopotamia & The Akkadian Empire

Last Monday the children of Class 6 took part in a workshop about Mesopotamia and The Akkadian Empire, delivered by Bob & Sarah from Falmouth Art Gallery, to finish off their learning about civilisations. They made fantastic warrior outfits & clothing, created ancient landscape paintings, learnt about mixing colours and heard a story about some of the Mesopotamian gods & deities. A huge thank you to both Bob & Sarah for coming to visit, the children had a fantastic, creative day!

Home Learning – Thursday 12th November 2015

As part of our Space Weather mission this week, and in preparation for some artwork next week, you need to find some pictures of Auroras (also known as the Northern or Southern Lights). If possible, it would be great if you could print some or bring some in to help you.

Home Learning – Thursday 22nd October 2015

Class 6 Home Learning – Thursday 22nd October 2015

After Half Term, Class 6’s topic ‘A Brave New World’ will take a slight twist, as we will be taking part in the Unlimited Space Agency’s ‘Astro Science Challenge’. This is to celebrate British astronaut, Tim Peake’s, mission to the International Space Station. You can find more information about this at http://unspaceagency.com/mission/the-astro-challenge/

For Home Learning over the half term break, it would be great if the children could find any gadgets, costumes or materials that we could use in our space themed role-play area, which we will be constructing during the first week back.

Have a lovely break,

Miss Draper

Class 6 Home Learning – Thursday 15th October 2015
This week, we have been using the British Museum website to start to find out about Ancient Sumer, the first recorded civilisation in world history. We have also almost finished our first e-safety unit – S.M.A.R.T ways to use the internet.
To tie in our topic learning on Ancient Sumer and our e-safety learning (in particular ‘R’ – using reliable sources of information) this week’s Home Learning is to use the British Museum website, and 1 or 2 other sources of information, to find out about ONE of the following aspects of Sumerian life:
· Food

· Religion

· Language/Counting System
The information they find can presented however they like e.g. a mind-map, a poster, a leaflet etc.
